WATER
Bell County is in Stage 1 Drought and facing Stage 2 by the end of July. There are a number of inconsistencies when Rowan talks about water. The City of Temple has failed to answer requests for water information. This can affect all 37 counties in the Brazos River Basin from Lubbock to Sugar Land.
ELECTRIC
Rowan has been approved to use up to 600 MW of electricity. The total winter surplus for Bell County is 505 MW. Rowan appears to be exempt from the rules that prevent them from causing a brownout. The City of Temple has the ability to correct this but has declined to take responsibility. The City appears to have based their estimates on annual averages instead of peak load times. The increased infrastructure costs will be felt by every citizen as Rowan has no plans to offset their impact. This endangers the lives of the weakest of us.
ENVIRONMENT
The city of Temple regularly invites residents of all ages to celebrate sustainability and community to promote eco-friendly living, conservation and city beautification. Per our own city leadership and our responsibility as a community, we must understand the environmental impact of data centers in our Temple. The city has not obtained an environmental impact report and has refused to pause while we find how this will change our community.
What Data Centers Cost You
Data centers drive up costs for citizens primarily by overloading the electrical grid, forcing utilities to invest in expensive new infrastructure, such as power plants and transmission lines (like those being installed in Salado) the costs of which are passed on to homeowners and small businesses. As AI and cloud computing fuel rapid demand growth, data centers can also cause electricity market prices to spike.
HEAT FACTOR
A data center heat island is an area where land and air surface temperatures are significantly higher than the surrounding areas, caused by immense waste heat discharged from, and cooling systems of, massive server farms. Recent studies indicate these facilities can raise surrounding temperatures by an average of 3.6°F to 4.3°F - with spikes up to 16°F - impacts that can extend up to 6.2 miles from the site.
Health Concerns
Health concerns related to being near large-scale (Tier 5/hyperscale) data centers are significant, primarily stemming from air pollution, severe noise, and water resource depletion. These facilities, often operating 24/7, can function more like heavy industrial sites than typical office buildings, with recent studies estimating that data center pollution could cause hundreds of premature deaths and significant public health costs by 2030.
HOME VALUES AND TAXES
Imagine a year from now, your house is in the center of a ten-degree higher than anywhere else heat zone. A home you spent a lot of money on, in a city you believed in.
If you can get past the heat zone in a town that has over 260 days in the mid 80’s or higher a year, you also have brownouts and are in an extreme drought. The local lakes are reported to be drained soon. What happens to your house values? Data Centers can leave and fail, and already have in Temple… who is paying the taxes that are lost with reduced home prices and empty industrial waste that depleted the county’s resources?
This is likely, data proves it.
